Nigeria has expressed disappointment with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger for their decision to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). This is the initial comment from the chair of the economic and political body following the announcement of the three governments' decision to leave on Sunday. The three states had already been suspended from Ecowas due to recent coups. The military rulers have chosen to distance themselves from their former colonial power, France, and have instead strengthened their ties with Russia. They formed a mutual defense pact in September called the Alliance of Sahel States to restore security before organizing elections. Does Nigeria's disappointment reflect genuine concern for regional stability or an attempt to mask ECOWAS' failure to curtail the actions of the Sahal nations?
