Nigeria’s Correctional Service Records Zero Jailbreaks and Attacks in 2023
2023 marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). The agency reported zero jailbreaks and attacks in all 253 custodial centers across the country, a heartening contrast to the security breaches of yesteryears. Assistant Controller of Corrections Abubakar Umar, the NCoS spokesperson, revealed this development in a recent interview, emphasizing the government’s comprehensive security measures that were deployed in response to previous incidents.
Among the alarming events that triggered this security overhaul was a notable attack on July 5, 2022. The Islamic State West Africa Province targeted the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, facilitating the escape of 879 inmates. The repercussions of this incident catalyzed a new wave of fortification for the nation’s custodial centers. The robust security measures implemented in 2023 involved the deployment of massive personnel and technology for intelligence gathering, infrastructural development, and improved security strategies. The absence of jailbreaks and attacks this year is a clear testament to the efficacy of these measures.
Collaboration and Intelligence: Key to Success
Umar acknowledged the collaboration and intelligence sharing among law enforcement agencies as fundamental to this success. This partnership has fostered a safe and secure environment for both inmates and staff in the custodial centers. Additionally, the NCoS emphasized the role of proper inmate rehabilitation and reintegration in maintaining peace within these centers. According to Umar, a secure custodial system is not only crucial for public safety but it also contributes significantly to societal well-being.
As we head into 2024, the Nigerian Correctional Service plans to continue this positive trend. With the effective security strategies in place and the unwavering commitment of personnel, the chances of future jailbreaks and attacks are significantly reduced.
