Women’s World Cup
Lauren James dent off as below-par Lionesses squeeze into world cup quarter-finals.
England reached the quarter-finals after a dismal 120 minutes; the Lionesses were 4-2 winners in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw; Nigeria dominated but could not find the net; England will face Colombia or Jamaica in the last eight. It was another game where the lesser-deserving team made it into the last eight on penalties,
After the delight of seeing Keira Walsh return to the XI following her knee injury, Sarina Wiegman stuck with a 3-5-2 that did so well against China. However, England reverted back to the laboured performances of the opening two group games, as Nigeria registered 20 shots to England's 12.
The game got worse for them too as James (87) was sent off late in normal time after a frustrated and avoidable stamp on the back of Michelle Alozie. It was reminiscent of David Beckham and Wayne Rooney at the 1998 and 2006 World Cups respectively - the young star lashing out and being penalised. She will now miss the quarter-final, and perhaps more if FIFA decide to punish her further.

Arsenal beats Man City in penalty shootout to win Community Shield after stoppage-time equalizer.
Arsenal has started the English season how the team hopes to end it — by getting the better of Manchester City. Arsenal beat City 4-1 in a penalty shootout, after equalizing in the 101st minute in regulation time to draw 1-1, to win the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The match serves as a traditional curtain-raiser to the season and is typically played between the winners of last season’s Premier League and FA Cup. Because City won both as part of the title treble also containing the Champions League for the first time, Arsenal took part as the runner-up in the league and might have gained a psychological edge heading into the new campaign that starts on Friday. Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale said. “It’s a marker to know we can go and beat Man City in a big game when it matters.”
Cole Palmer curled in a 78th-minute goal after coming off the bench to give City the lead, only for Leandro Trossard to score with a deflected shot in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage time, taking the game to penalties. Games in English soccer are set to have more minutes added on in the upcoming season — like at the men’s World Cup in Qatar last year — after statistics showed the ball was only in play on average around 55 minutes during Premier League matches last season. Sunday’s finish was a demonstration of the impact that more stoppage time could have. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. “We have to prepare to play 100 minutes. It is going to happen every single week.”

Football transfer news
Kane Kane waves goodbye to Tottenham fans after he scores four against shakhtar and future remains uncertain.
Harry Kane undertook a lap of appreciation on his own after Tottenham smashed Shakhtar Donetsk in their final friendly of the summer. The striker has entered the final year of his contract at the Premier League side, with heavy doubts around his future. Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are desperate to sign him, seeing two bids rejected by Tottenham already this summer.
As reported, Spurs have been resistant to selling their star man and he started their final friendly of the summer as Donetsk came to visit. The game raised money for Ukraine, which remains at war with Russia after last year’s invasion. Kane scored four goals in his side’s 5-1 win and curiously after the game took to the pitch again on his own. He had earlier been subbed off, but returned wearing a training top to wave and applaud the home crowd.
While it is not an unusual sight for Kane to thank the home supporters after the final whistle, his latest gesture comes with his future increasingly uncertain. The England captain is thought to have demanded a deal be agreed before the start of the season, or he will stay at Spurs. Though he has insisted he will not be signing a new deal, he is ready to see out his contract with Tottenham. Kane is keen to avoid disrupting new boss Ange Postecoglou and his squad by leaving after the season begins. Spurs face Brentford next week in their opening game of the Premier League campaign. If a deal is done as per Kane’s wishes, then Sunday’s friendly could be the last time he is seen in a Tottenham shirt. If it is to be his final game, then Kane went out in style, scoring four goals in a dominant win.

Basketball
French basketball caught on to NBA-style sports business.
The Halle Georges-Carpentier is not renowned for its gala evenings. Since the 1960s, this gymnasium with its corrugated iron walls has served as a buffer between the towers of Paris's 13th arrondissement and the ring road. The neighborhood's schoolchildren, children of African and Asian immigrants, know the multi-purpose arena by heart. The arena is a symbol of the newfound importance placed on leisure activities during France's "trente glorieuses", a three-decade period of economic growth after the Second World War. At the beginning of April, a few hundred people turned up at the entrance of the sports hall.
That evening, Paris Basketball was hosting Fos Provence Basket (the club from Fos-sur-Mer, in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of France), in a no-stakes game in Betclic Élite, the top division of the French basketball championship. Attendance was low; two of the four stands had been closed. A crackling sound system played hip-hop, while the screen – not exactly giant – projected images of National Basketball Association (NBA) stars, idols that are distant yet so familiar. "It all begins here," proclaimed a banner hanging from the ceiling. The modest surroundings don't tamp down ambition.

Formula 1
Mercedes believe Belgian Grand Prix bouncing for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell was not caused by upgrades.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both complained during the race that the bouncing issues which plagued their 2022 campaign had reappeared in significant fashion at Spa-Francorchamps. Despite still being a long way off the pace of Red Bull's dominant RB19, Mercedes appeared to make progress with a series of upgrades introduced in the run-up to Formula 1's summer break.
Mercedes had no opportunity to do dry running with the updated parts in the one practice session provided in a Sprint weekend, and therefore had to make something of a gamble with their setup choice for Friday afternoon's qualifying session, which they were then stuck with for the remainder of the weekend. "We definitely had an amount of bouncing [last] weekend, both drivers were telling us that and we could see it in the data," Mercedes chief technical officer Mike Elliott said. "We could also see an amount of bouncing on the other cars and I think some of it is the nature of the circuit at Spa and in fact we had huge amounts of bouncing last year as did most teams.
