Nigeria: Main Labour Union To Go On Strike Over Govt Removal Of Fuel Subsidy
The Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC) has said it plans to go on strike from Wednesday to protest
against a hike of fuel prices in what would be the first big test for the West
African nation's new President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after he scrapped a costly
fuel subsidy. Nigerians are struggling with the surging fuel prices after newly
elected President Bola Tinubu declared an end to popular subsidies, a move
analysts and experts said was long overdue.
"That the NNPC
(Nigerian National Petroleum corporation, ed.), a private limited liability
company, that illegally announced the price regime in the oil sector refuses to
revert itself for negotiations to continue. That the Nigeria labour congress
and all its affiliates will withdraw their services and commence protests
nationwide." Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress
said Friday at an emergency meeting.
