Lagos to Amend Transport Sector Law – Attorney General

Laws should correct, not destroy, says Jandor Lagos State Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Moyosore Onigbanjo said yesterday that the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Act (2018) is currently under review by the Lagos State House of Assembly for amendment. . The development could be related to the outrage over the auction of abandoned and seized vehicles by the Lagos state government for traffic violations. This was made known by Onigbanjo while he was appearing on a Channels Television morning show, Sunrise Daily. Onigbanjo said: “The amendments to the Transport Act are currently being reviewed by the House of Assembly and will come into force as soon as possible. This issue of driving against traffic has become such a nuisance, danger and threat to society that something drastic has to be done and the legislators of the time imposed these sanctions. “There is a process to reform the law. People can approach their representatives in the Assembly and make agitations that in our opinion this is draconian and we believe that the law should be changed. That could boost the process, but right now there is a process to review the law.” The Commissioner, however, maintained that such is the law today and, as such, advised people not to risk it in their own interest. Onigbanjo warned commercial drivers and other motorists not to jeopardize their livelihood by breaking traffic laws and killing innocent road users and bystanders in the process. “If you see the Lady of Justice, it’s blindfolded, she doesn’t look at emotions; the law does not look at emotions. Why risk her livelihood if she knows she is the only thing she has to support herself financially? Why risk breaking the law?
